Know about Glaucoma
Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness, which causes the gradual and irreversible loss of peripheral vision. But reducing intra-ocular pressure can slow the progression of disease. The pressure exists because there's fluid produced in the eye, and it needs to filter out. .

Symptoms of Glaucoma:
  • Development of tunnel vision, which is characterized by loss of side (peripheral) vision.
  • Sudden and extreme pain that affects only one eye.
  • Vision that clouds up or otherwise worsens.
  • Vomiting and nausea.
  • Seeing a rainbow-colored halo around lights. Or having a sensitivity to light.
  • A feeling of swelling or redness of the eye.
  • There may be no symptom and patient at risk should get checked up.

Glaucoma is usually controlled with eye drops or oral medication given in various combinations. These medications act to decrease the eye pressure either by assisting flow of fluid outside the eye or by decreasing the amount of fluid entering the eye. If medication is poorly tolerated or not effective in controlling the intra-ocular pressure, surgery is done to create an artificial drainage channel for the fluid to drain out.

Applanation tonometry:
It is the treatment to determine the intraocular pressure (IOP), the fluid pressure inside the eye. It is an important test in the evaluation of patients with glaucoma. Applanation tonometers are calibrated to measure pressure in millimeters of mercury. It is the method that infers the intraocular pressure from the force required to flatten a constant area of the cornea.

Humphrey Field Analyser:
This is the most advanced visual field diagnostic treatment, that tests the stage of disease, rate of progression and a patient's risk of future vision loss by automatically summarizing all available visual field test results. With this advanced perimeter, surgeons could closely monitor changes in the eye to prevent irreversible loss of vision for a disease that often has no warning signs.
