What is Vitreo-Retina?
This include the diseases involving the light sensitive layer of the eye or retina, the vitreous or the optic nerve that connects the retina to the brain and often cause serious visual problems. However, early and prompt diagnosis with appropriate treatment allows better visual recovery.

Vitreo Retina Symptoms:
  • Sudden or gradual decrease in vision
  • Loss of field of vision
  • Flashes of light
  • Floaters
  • Objects appearing distorted (Metamorphopsia)
  • Night Blindness
Apart from these symptoms, there are other causes such as diabetic retinopathy, Retinal detachment, Retinal vascular diseases, Macular disorders, Vitreous Hemorrhage, Anterior segment complications, and age related macular degeneration.

Treatment:

There are various diagnostic tests, procedures and equipment used in retina and vitreous diseases, which include:

Laser Treatment of Retinal disease:
The treatment is a painless Out Patient procedure and further prevents loss of vision. Lasers are commonly used, when the patient is suffering from diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears , age related macular degeneration, and other retinal vascular disorders.

Vitreo Retina surgery:

It is an effective procedure for regeneration of normal vision. Our Vitreo-retinal surgeons are ophthalmologists who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of a large variety of conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, and many others. Specific retina and vitreous diseases include: age-related macular degeneration, chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine toxicity, cystoid macular edema, color blindness, central serous chorio retinopathy, diabetic eye diseases, diabetic retinopathy, macular hole, posterior vitreous detachment, retinal detachment, and retinopathy of prematurity.

Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA):

This will analyze the diseases related to retinal blood vessel. Very good diagnosis of many retinal conditions like diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneration. Multiple image overlay, merge and graphic function gives the person advantage to diagnose more effectively.

Fundus photography:
Fundus photographs are used to assess the presence of diabetic retinopathy, age-related maculopathy and other retinal diseases which are the leading causes of loss of vision. The fundus camera generates a flash that is projected into the patient’s eye to take photographs, reflects off the fundus, and then travels through the camera’s optical system to the film.

B-Scan:
This test is useful in cases like dense vitreous hemorrhage, significant cataract, corneal opacity, small pupil, trauma (to see for eyeball rupture), hazy media in endophthalmitis and retained intraocular foreign body. It is also very useful in making a diagnosis in cases of eye tumors like retinoblastoma, Choroidal melanoma, Choroidal osteoma and in inflammatory conditions like posterior scleritis. This test helps in diagnosis and planning the management. It also helps us in predicting the outcome of the treatment.

Ultrasonography:
This is a simple non-invasive test that uses sound waves to see the internal eye structures. It is a painless, safe and short procedure, performed routinely. It is of two types-A and B scan. A-scan measures the antero-posterior length of the eyeball to calculate the IOL power in cases of cataract surgery.B-scan is used when the clarity is not good for examining the internal structures of the eye.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT):
This will examine the central retinal layers of the eye. It is a non-invasive technology used for imaging the retina, the multi-layered sensory tissue lining the back of the eye. OCT permits doctors to discover cross-sectional images of the retina, is revolutionizing the early detection and treatment of eye conditions such as macular holes, pre-retinal membranes, macular swelling and even optic nerve damage. OCT scans the eye and traces a pixel representation of the anatomic layers within the retina. Each of these ten important layers can be differentiated and their thickness can be measured. For certain conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration and cystoid macular edema, OCT procedure is able to reduce or eliminate the need for fluorescein angiography for some patients.
